Kidston and Gabriel attended Goodnights for a prearranged afternoon meeting with Sarah Canavan, who invited them into her plush basement office, all dark wood, maroon leather sofas and expensive art prints. Kidston hadn’t seen her for over two years, since after her brother’s trial. Sarah had first crossed his orbit during the Ellie Hunter investigation when she’d offered up information to help the enquiry, although Kidston realised that she was pursuing her own agenda at the time. He recalled a slightly anxious visit to her home for an interview when she’d flirted outrageously with him. She was as stunning as he remembered her. Her light-brown hair was cut shorter with blonde tints, scraped back in a slicked wet-look style. It showed off her strong cheekbones and large expressive blue eyes. She was wearing a three-quarter length black leather coat over a white silk blouse and white jeans.

‘Detective Chief Inspector Kidston,’ Sarah greeted him with a broad smile. ‘Congratulations, Luc. And this must be your replacement, Detective Inspector Gabriel. Is that right?’

‘Thanks, Sarah,’ Kidston said. ‘Yes, this is Jimmy Gabriel, who’s taking over from me at the Gorbals.’ He wasn’t surprised at her being up to speed with their promotions – she’d previously demonstrated access to an intelligence network that could rival anything the police had. ‘You’re well informed, as usual.’

‘You know me and my sources.’ She smiled.

Sarah Canavan had been the brains behind her family’s criminal enterprises long before her parents passed away. A family consigliere to her late father, Big Davie, who’d taken her advice on property deals and other investments as she worked to legitimise her part of the family business. It was no surprise to Kidston that she’d traded up her chain of tanning salons and was now running a successful nightclub.

‘Congratulations to you too, Sarah,’ Kidston said. ‘This is quite the operation you’ve built up here.’

‘What can I do for you, gentlemen? I know you’ve had your colleagues visit the club during opening hours for your murder investigation. Any leads?’

‘Sadly, not as many as we’d have liked,’ Kidston said. ‘In some respects, that’s why we’re here. Your head bouncer: where did you get him?’

‘Chief steward, tut tut, Luc. You’re bringing down the tone of my club already with comments like that. Billy Bannerman’s very experienced, worked all the major clubs in the city.’

‘He’s got convictions for drug dealing, I’m not sure you’d be aware.’

‘I wasn’t aware. There’ll be no dealing here, I can assure you,’ Sarah said indignantly. ‘If I catch any of them dealing, including Bannerman, then their feet won’t touch the ground.’

‘My sources tell me that cocaine, poppers, and ecstasy are freely available here any night of the week,’ Kidston said. ‘While I’ve no prima facie evidence that your stewards are dealing, I suspect that to be the case.’

‘That’s news to me,’ Sarah said, her expression changing to a look of grave concern. ‘What can I do about it?’

‘Sarah, I could blitz your club with undercover cops, with the drugs search dogs and the ultraviolet lights and there would be plenty of evidence to close you down.
